What is the Child Support Grant?

The Child Support Grant (CSG) is a social grant provided by SASSA to help primary caregivers meet the basic needs of children in their care. It is paid monthly for each qualifying child.

The grant is means-tested, meaning it is available to caregivers whose income falls below a certain threshold. The current grant amount is R580 per child per month.

You can apply for the Child Support Grant for up to 6 children that you are the primary caregiver for. The grant continues until the child turns 18 years old.

Who Qualifies for the Child Support Grant?

Caregiver Requirements:

  • South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee
  • Primary caregiver of the child
  • Lives in South Africa
  • Meets the income requirements (means test)

Child Requirements:

  • Under 18 years old
  • South African citizen
  • Not in a state-funded institution
  • Living with the caregiver
Income Requirements (Means Test)

To qualify for the Child Support Grant, your income must be below the following thresholds:

    Original unabridged birth certificate

    Utility bill or affidavit confirming residence
