SASSA Required Documents
Complete checklist of documents needed for all SASSA grant applications. Having the correct documents ready will speed up your application process.
Important Information
All certified copies must be less than 3 months old. Original documents may be required for verification at the SASSA office. Always bring both originals and certified copies to your appointment.
General Document Requirements
All documents must be certified copies not older than 3 months. Certification can be done at any police station free of charge.
Acceptable documents include utility bills, lease agreements, or an affidavit from a commissioner of oaths confirming your address.
The green ID book or smart ID card is required. Temporary IDs may be accepted in some cases.
SASSA card, bank account, or Post Office account details are needed for payment. A SASSA card can be issued at your local office.
Documents by Grant Type
- South African ID document or valid permit
- Proof of residence (utility bill, affidavit, or lease agreement)
- Bank account details (optional but recommended)
- Cellphone number for communication
Note: Application is done online at srd.sassa.gov.za. No physical documents need to be submitted initially.
- Caregiver's South African ID document
- Child's birth certificate
- Child's clinic card (Road to Health card)
- Proof of income or affidavit if unemployed
- Proof of residence
- School attendance letter (if child is of school-going age)
- Maintenance court order (if applicable)
Note: If the applicant is not the biological parent, additional documents such as a court order or affidavit may be required.

- Bank statement (last 3 months)
- Proof of private pension (if applicable)
Note: Applicants must be 60 years or older. The means test applies to determine eligibility.

Note: A medical assessment by a SASSA-appointed medical officer is mandatory. Temporary disability grants require reassessment.

Note: The court order is the most critical document. It must be valid and not expired.

- School attendance letter (if child attends special school)
Note: The child must require permanent home care due to severe mental or physical disability.
